The Importance of Leadership to Safety

Safety is a top concern at DT Specialized Services, and we believe in a top down approach to ensuring all our job sites and employees stay safe and accident-free. The way leadership goes about promoting and enforcing safety procedures will have a large impact on the overall success of safety goals. There are three key components leadership can use to have a positive influence on safety.

Lead by Example

One of the best ways leadership and management can promote a culture of safety is to lead by example. Always wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) when visiting job sites is the first step. There are also more subtle ways that are often overlooked. Being aware of body language and posture while attending safety meetings is a huge way to promote safety. If the leadership team is visibly unengaged when discussing safety, employees will notice and pick up that safety is only a formality that doesn’t need to be taken seriously. It’s important that leadership’s commitment to safety is reflected in word and action.

Establish Trust

Although important, safety procedures rarely make completing tasks easier. In order for employees to follow through with safety protocol, they need to trust management enough to believe the safety procedures put in place truly are for the best. To achieve this, management must have a good relationship with all employees and establish open lines of communication.

Be Consistent

The message of safety needs to be heard often and consistently. A company is only as strong as its weakest link, and this is true for safety. If one foreman or superintendent isn’t as committed to safety as everyone else, it can seriously compromise leadership’s credibility. Every member of management, at every job site needs to have the same level of commitment to safety.
